The Hindus all over the world celebrate Diwali because on this day Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya from exile of 14 years. His wife Site, brother Laxman and Lord Hanuman also returned along with him. It is believed that when they were returning to their palace from Sri Lanka their path was decorated by the villagers with lights and diyas to express their joy and excitement. The ritual still exists, and people decorate their homes, offices, shops, workplaces etc with diyas, torans, lights, candles and everything which beautifies the places. The beliefs of some Hindus and their reason of celebrating Diwali are different. They believe that the Pandavas returned to their homes after spending 12 years of Vanvas (means living in jungle) and one year of Agyatvas (means living an anonymous life).

Some people celebrate Diwali for pleasing Goddess Laxmi. She is belived to be the goddess of money and prosperity. Goddess Laxmi is the wife of Lord Vishnu and the blessings can turn bad luck into good luck and poverty into richness. The five day Diwali celebration starts when the goddess Laxmi was born from the whipping of celestial oceans by the Devas and the Asuras. It is also believed that on the Diwali night the goddess Laxmi was married to Lord after choosing him as her spouse. Some believers also worship and make offerings to Lord Ganesha as they believe him to be the ethical beginner of new tasks and remover of hurdles on the way of success. Goddess Saraswati is worshipped by many believers as a symbol of knowledge and learning. They believe that blessings of goddess Saraswati will empower them with knowledge. Kuber is also offered as a symbol of treasury and wealth manager.

DIWALI 2020 - INTERESTING FACTS, SAFETY TIPS AND HOW TO MAKE BETTER DIWALI

The festivities of Diwali go on for 5 to 6 days. Each day has its own tale to tell. The festivities begin with Dhanteras, which is also known as 'Dhanvantari Triodasi'. The name comes from two words 'dhan' and 'tera', which stands for 'wealth' and 'thirteen', as it on the thirteenth day of the Hindu calendar. It is a day devoted to celebrating wealth. People usually buy gold and utensils around this time. Some also worship Lord Ganesha, Lord Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi on this day. Dhanteras is preceded by houses and business premises being thoroughly cleaned and renovated or painted.

Safety Tips: To avoid accidents with fire or any sparks, make sure that you wear cotton clothes and stay away from all kinds of synthetic material. Wear earplugs while going out to avoid any damage to your hearing, especially if you have sensitive ears. Always keep a first aid kit handy. Always keep some water and sand in store, near where you're lighting fireworks. Burst crackers in open spaces like playgrounds and fields. Make sure you purchase good quality firecrackers from licensed sellers. With quality fireworks, there is a reduced chance of any kind of mishaps taking place.

According to Jain history, the founder, or the last Jain Tirthankar of Jainism attained 'Moksha' or salvation on the day of Diwali. Hence, the festival is devoted to his achievement of nirvana! Most people do now know that it was the day of Diwali when the foundation stone of the Golden Temple was laid and the festival is celebrated by the Sikhs at the Golden Temple since 1577. The biggest Diwali celebration outside of India is hosted by the English city of Leicester. More than 800 million people celebrate this festival in various ways.

Some quick tips for an emergency:

Always keep the first aid box ready In case of shock, switch off the main switch & seek doctor’s help immediately In case of burn, place the burnt area under cool running water or a damp cloth can be placed over the injury if not very painful Don’t use ice to cool the burns, it causes further damage to tissues Remove the clothing from the burn site, remove ornaments like bangles, finger rings, anklets, chains as the area will start to swell after some time making it difficult to remove them Take care not to burst the blisters If it is a superficial burn, you can apply a soothing ointment over the wound If there is an eye injury, immediately wash the eyes with water and call emergency If the person inhales smoke and is breathless, move him/her into the fresh air and rush him/her to an emergency

Diwali Tips

Avoid using electric lights to illuminate your home or any space.

Instead, opt for diyas (earthen lamps) and candles.

This saves electricity.

Limit usage of firecrackers that emit enormous smoke and sound Dispose off waste & burnt firecrackers properly after celebrations Select eco-friendly gifts and decorating items Enjoy community display
